What do other people think of my fear of balloons ?
As I've written elsewhere - children can be pretty cruel at times - fortunately
the passage of time is a great educator and most people realize that frailties
are quite common in the Human race and are happy to leave other peoples' problems
alone without criticism. Having said that - there will always be someone who can't
see how deep the pain can run and see the whole thing as a joke.
It is easy to say that you should avoid such people - but it's unlikely that you
will find out who they are until they actually find out about it - as far as I can
tell there are no specific guidelines which will tell you a character type which
will be prone to treating is as a bit of a laugh. On the other hand a person who
is kindly by nature is of course more likely to be sympathetic.
Recent media coverage (UK) has raised awareness about the balloon popping phobia
so more people now understand that there is a genuine problem. My experience is
that the vast majority of people are pleasant and caring - so most will try to
be understanding and helpful.
